Bought a fixer upper? With these 10 steps you can make it ready for the road again!

Most mopeds you buy from us can be delivered road ready. But our sharply priced fixer uppers require some time and attention from you.
Still doubting whether to take on your own project? Fear not! Go through these 10 steps that we also follow in our workshop, and your fixer upper will soon be ready for the road again. And honestly, there is nothing like riding a 4-stroke moped that you have refurbished yourself. Before you know it, you'll be working on your next project 😉

Step 1: Replace the spark plug
We recommend always replacing the spark plug on a fixer upper. This because a good spark is essential for a moped to start and run well. Always check the old spark plug too; if it is very rusty, dirty or damaged, it is wise to also disassemble and check the cylinder head and cylinder.

Step 2: Check the fuel system
Check the fuel system on these aspects:
  1. Check for fuel supply to the carburettor.
  2. Look inside the tank and check that it is free of rust and old fuel. Remove old fuel if necessary.
  3. Check the operation of the fuel tap. It should obviously not leak to the outside.
  4. Check the fuel hose. It should not be dried out or hardened.

Step 3: Clean the carburettor
We recommend always cleaning the carburettor of a fixer upper, both from the outside and inside. This is because the moped often has stood still for a long time, which can leave residues of (dried-in) fuel in it. When replacing the carburettor, always replace the gaskets as well, for example with our seal kits.

Step 4: Change the oil
You can check if there is still oil in the engine, and if it is still in good condition. But actually, we always recommend to changing the oil of a fixer upper.

After this, check the functioning of the oil pump. You can do this by loosening the bolt on the side of the cylinder head. Then you start the moped with the kickstarter. Once the moped has run for a few seconds, oil should flow past the loosened bolt. So make sure you also place a drip tray to catch the oil.

Step 5: Check and adjust the valves
Check the valves, and adjust them properly. This will ensure optimum combustion and performance of the engine. Make sure the valve clearance is between 0.05 mm and 0.10 mm. Remember to adjust both the intake valve and the exhaust valve. Setting the valves is quite easy, if you have the right tools like a valve adjustment tool and feeler gauges. Also watch our (Dutch) video where we show how to set the valves of a four-stroke moped.

Step 6: Check the clutch plates
Check the condition of the clutch plates. Most fixer uppers have been standing still for a long time, and as a result, the clutch plates may be sticky or heavily soiled. If this is the case, it is best to replace the clutch plates and clean the clutch housing thoroughly. Make sure you replace the clutch plates for the right kind, suitable for a manual clutch or semi-automatic clutch. Are you going to replace the clutch plates? Do so before changing the oil 😉

Step 7: Replace the tires
We recommend always replacing both inner tubes and outer tyres on a fixer upper, as they are often worn out. Before replacing the tyres, you can also check the condition and profile of the tyres.
  • Check that you cannot see the canvas of the tyre. It is no problem if a tyre has some small cracks in the wall of the tyre
  • Check that the tyres have sufficient profile: at least 1 mm.
  • Make sure that you have the right tyre pressure. Keep 2.2 bar for your front tyre, and 2.5 bar for your rear tyre.
Are the tyres on your Honda C50 due for replacement? Then choose this popular front tyre (with line profile) and rear tyre (with street profile), for example. Also don’t forget the inner tubes and rim tape, and protect your tyre from bumps and sharp edges in the rim.

Step 8: Replace the battery
We recommend always replacing the battery of a fixer upper. This is because it has often already reached the end of its lifespan. We have various batteries available, for example a 6-volt (acid) battery (suitable for an old type C50, among others), or a 12-volt (gel) battery (suitable for a new type C50, among others).

Step 9: Check the lights and reflectors
Check that the lights on your moped are working properly, and replace any burnt-out bulbs.

Step 10: Prepare your moped for the inspection
In the Netherlands, your moped needs a Dutch number plate before you can drive it on public roads. You will get this after the RDW has inspected and approved your moped.
Make sure that, if necessary, you have restricted your moped before having it inspected. You do this by placing a 30 mm washer between the exhaust and the cylinder head.

Have you completed all the steps? Then your fixer upper is probably running smooth again! We wish you lots of driving pleasure and safe kilometers. And if you are looking for a new project or parts, please let us know by contacting us. We are happy to help!
